ETERNITY:WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

If you knew you were going to die right now, could you answer this question? If not, you could be going to hell, but you don't have to. The fact is that if we all were to seek justice for eternity, every person, since the beginning of mankind would go to hell, even the most religious person. Why? The reason is sin. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." That means every person has committed sins, even the Pope and Billy Graham.

"So, big deal! Why should I care about sin?" Sin is a big deal! Romans 6:23 says: "For the wages of sin is death...." Death in this passage refers to hell (eternal separation from God) and because all of us have sinned, we would receive justice by going to hell, but God wants to give us mercy.

Yes, God wants to give us mercy. If you read the rest of Romans 6:23, you will find that "...the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." It means heaven is a gift through Jesus. How is Jesus the bridge between heaven and hell? He took our place, by dying on the cross to save us from the curse of our sins. 1 Peter 3:18 says, "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God...."

"Jesus died for my sins, Can I live any way I want?" No! Remember, eternal life in heaven is a gift (Romans 6:23). To have a gift, you first have to receive it.

How Do I Receive This Gift of Eternal Life in Heaven?

  1. Repent
Ask God to forgive you of your sins and turn away from them. (Read 1 John 1:9)

  2. Ask Jesus to come in and be Lord of your life. (Read Revelation 3:20)

Now What?

If you prayed the two items above, welcome into the family of God. It's not religion you have received (trying to reach God out of your own efforts), but a relationship with God (God coming to you by Jesus). You are saved (from hell and now on the way to heaven) not out of your own works, but only through faith in what Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9 and John 14:6).

Start getting to know God by praying and reading the Bible daily. Also, get yourself in a church that can help you develop in your relationship with God. Praying the two things above, from your heart, does bring eternal life to you, but continuing to purposely be involved in your sins is like giving the gift back to God, saying "I don't want it!" Think about it, if you forgive someone, would you still want them to still do those things to you on purpose? Of course not! Reading the Bible is like spiritual food (Matthew 4), it will help your faith grow (Romans 10:17) and help you overcome your sinful habits (Psalm 119:11). It will also supply all your spiritual and emotional needs (Philippians 4:19).
